# What is the location code?

A **location code** is a short, unique identifier assigned to every location in your organisation. It helps tell one location apart from another when you have many — among other things when importing employees, where the system uses this code to assign a person to the right place. The field is optional, but it is worth filling in if you plan to work with data from a spreadsheet.

# Where to find the location code

You will find the code on the **"Basic information"** page of the chosen location.

1. In the menu on the left click **Locations** (the **ORGANISATION** group).
2. On the chosen location click the **pencil** icon ("Edit location") in the row (or the ⋮ menu).

3. In the settings panel on the left choose **"Basic information"**. The **"Location code"** field is under the location name.

# Editing the code

You enter or change the code value directly in the **"Location code"** field and then save the changes.

1. Enter or change the value in the **"Location code"** field.
2. Click **"Save"**.

| Important: The location code has to be unique within the organisation. If you enter a code that another location already has, the system will not let you save the changes.

# What the location code is for

The code makes it easier to identify a location across the system when you run several. Most often you will use it when **importing employees** — you enter the code in the spreadsheet and the system assigns the employee to the location with that code.

|| Remember: How to import employees using the location code is described in [Importing employees from a file](https://help.proplanum.com/en/article/importing-employees-from-a-file-1uju64t/).
