# Duplicating a location

If you are setting up a location very similar to one that already exists, you do not have to configure everything from scratch. Duplicating creates a new location based on the one you chose and brings over its positions, settings and shift templates — you only give a new name and address details. That saves time when you open another shop, department or branch with the same configuration.

The action is available to the **Organisation Administrator** and the **Advisor**.

# How to duplicate a location

1. In the menu on the left click **Locations** (the **ORGANISATION** group).
2. On the location you want to copy, click the **⋮** icon (three dots) at the end of the row and choose **"Duplicate location"**.

3. In the **"Duplicate location"** window fill in the basic details of the new location:

* **Name** — required; it has to differ from the names of existing locations.
* **Location code** — optional; if you give one, it has to be unique. More in [What is the location code?](https://help.proplanum.com/en/article/what-is-the-location-code-1fkv382/).
* **Address details** — **Country**, **Street**, **Postal code**, **City**.
* **Description** — optional.

4. Click **"Save"**. The new location will appear in the list. To close the window without creating a copy, click **"Cancel"**.

| Important: The address fields are not copied from the original — enter them anew for the new location.

# What gets copied

The following are brought over from the source location to the new one:

* **Positions** together with their settings (accountability, visibility) — see [Managing positions and tags in locations](https://help.proplanum.com/en/article/managing-positions-and-tags-in-locations-kua7j5/).
* **Shift templates** assigned to those positions.
* The **planning**, **availability**, **overtime**, **night time** and **time tracking** settings and the location's **opening hours**.
* The **region** (the assignment within the structure) — only if the source location has one set.

|| Remember: Once duplicated, you can freely change all the copied settings in the new location's editor — the copy is independent of the original.

# What the copy does not contain

A duplicate is an "empty" location ready to work — it copies the configuration but not the operational data. The following do **not** carry over to the new location:

* the assigned **employees**,
* **schedules** and planned shifts,
* **time tracking entries**.

You add employees to the new location separately (for example by import — see [Importing employees from a file](https://help.proplanum.com/en/article/importing-employees-from-a-file-1uju64t/)), and you plan the schedule from scratch.
